Introduction
This page is a gathering place for tips and resources for those who find themselves dealing with parking issues in their neighborhoods. We will provide links to appropriate city codes and links to department forms that deal with the variety of parking issues that residents may face. We cannot answer all parking-related questions, but we can make it simpler for residents to find the city employees who can help keep our neighborhoods pleasant places to live.
We are doing our best to make these pages intuitive and easy to follow. If something is not clear or is confusing, please go to our Contact page and drop us a note describing the problem. We will try to clarify and correct any shortcomings. If something has worked well for you, please let us know that too.
Parking Districts
San Luis Obispo has ten Residential Parking Districts that require a City Parking Permit. Vehicles without permits that are parked in a district are subject to a citation. Enforcement of a parking district is done on random patrol and on a complaint basis when staff is available. Contact the Parking Services Office to request enforcement at 781-7230 to report a violation. Be prepared to provide them with the street address where the violation is taking place and the license plate number of the vehicle. After hours and on weekends, call the Police Department at 781-7312 with the information.
Here is a map of all the districts. Links to a Parking District Information Guide and maps for each specific district are available at the Public Works Parking Services website. Four of the Districts (Alta Vista, Mission Orchard [added in 2014], Monterey Heights, and Murray) are weekdays only districts; the other six, including Anholm [added in 2018], are weekdays and weekends.
Abandoned Vehicles
-- On Public Property
To report an abandoned vehicle on public property, write down a description of the vehicle, the license plate number, and the address where it is parked. Call the Police Department at 781-7317 with the information.
-- On Private Property
To report an abandoned vehicle on private property, write down a description of the vehicle, the license plate number, and the address where it is parked. Call Code Enforcement, Building and Safety Division, Community Development Dept. at 781-7179/7588 with the information.
Vehicles and Vehicle Parts in Yards
Neighborhood Services Specialists respond to parking in yards and parts of automobiles in front yards. Call Neighborhood Services Specialists, Building and Safety Division, Community Development Dept. at 781-7591/7592 with the information.
RV used as Residence
Call the Building and Safety Division of the Community Development Department at 781-7180 to report a Recreational Vehicle being used as a residence. Provide the street address and vehicle license number.
